South Burgundy is the ancient religious centre of Burgundy, France and maybe even the whole of Europe, with the town Cluny as its capital. It was in Cluny that one of the biggest Roman cathedrals was built that could match the Saint-Peter cathedral in Rome.
An important religious order, the Benedictine monks founded their abbey around 1100 and made the town and the region prosper.
After the French revolution the abbey was closed and dismantled and Napoleon decided to house his precious horses and the French National Stables here.
Nowadays Cluny is a lively tourist town with the ruins of the abbey that still impress, beautiful horses and with the prettiest country side of Burgundy on its doorstep. A beautiful area steeped in history where even the tiniest villages have an impressive story to tell.
Cluny is located in the Saone et Loire, west of Chalon sur Saone.
This beautiful region will please most people, romantic, hills, interesting town and villages and not too for from civilization! Cute, stone houses can be found on a budget. For bigger properties you will have to have deeper pockets for this is a popular and very beautiful area.
